¨Chants from Overseas (Poetics and Contemporary Visions through Ceramic in the Dutch Caribbean)¨

Today, I am pleased to announce the beginning of my project, ¨Chants from Overseas (Poetics and Contemporary Visions through Ceramic in the Dutch Caribbean)¨, an artistic initiative that seeks to generate contemporary narratives where the Caribbean is the center of the universe on many levels.

During this research, I’m focusing on the expressive and narrative possibilities of ceramics, a medium capable of communicating contemporary discourses through different techniques but maintaining a heritage that can easily be associated with artisanal crafts that evoke a reconnection with the earth in an era of digital media.

My artistic practice investigates the narrative and hermeneutic capacity of contemporary drawing, its connection with Caribbean oral traditions, and learning mechanisms based on orality. I am also interested in ceramics as a tool for constructing allegorical objects and semiotic devices, erecting images related to historical processes, extractivism, identity, reproducibility, migration, and mimesis.

In these pictures, we see a piece that portrays a collective exhibition of South American artists, including Gustavo Perez (Mexico), Beatriz Daza (Colombia), Tecla Tofano (Venezuela), Valerie Brathwaite (Trinidad/Venezuela), Carlos Runcie Tanaka (Peru ), Paula Juchem (Brazil) and Rodrigo Torres (Brazil). In the background, you can admire a giant red installation by Ghanaian artist El Anatsui.

I am interested in seeing artists as sources of raw materials, in this case, ideas, from which cultural industries can build discourses, symbols, divisions, and limits.

In future posts, I will share my progress and more info 🌟
